In memoriam 2007

My second annual "In Memoriam" article for Polyphonic is now up (sounds like the famous "First Classic XYZ Tennis Tournament," doesn’t it?). This year’s version includes hyperlinks to obits and tribute sites.

I had several friends die this year, including Mary West and Vartan Manoogian (with whom I taught at Madeline Island Music Camp many years ago), as well as Mary Evens, who was principal cello in the London Symphony (of Canada) when I was there as principal violist. I’m sorry to see them go, but they had wonderful lives.

One person I didn’t put on that list was my father, who died on October 31. Dad was a scientist, of course, and not an orchestra person. But the paper that he and I wrote for Harmony has been surprisingly influential in this field (the board chair in St. Paul described it as one of his chief inspirations for moving towards the revolutionary structural changes they made in 2000). He had a wonderful life as well.

RIP, everyone.
